The Story of the Zulu Clans

Before 1876, there was no single “Zulu Nation” as we know it today!

Long ago, the people who would later become known as Zulu lived in many different clans across KwaZulu-Natal. Some clans were large, some were small, and each had its own leaders, traditions, and stories. The Zulu clan itself was just one of many clans.

In the early 1800s, King Shaka helped unite several clans into a powerful kingdom. Over time, more people became part of what we now call the Zulu nation.

Qhawe says

Just like a leopard’s spots come together to make one beautiful coat, many clans came together to help build the Zulu nation!
