Big 5 Wild Warriors gathered around a storytelling fire
Did You Know?

A name carried a whole story.

Many of our ancestors did not use first names and surnames the way we do today. Instead, people were known by:

  • Their father or ancestor
  • Their clan
  • Their achievements
  • Their character
  • Their homeland
Shaka kaSenzangakhona โ€” โ€œShaka, son of Senzangakhona.โ€
Mzilikazi kaMashobane โ€” โ€œMzilikazi, son of Mashobane.โ€

When someone asked, โ€œWho are your people?โ€ they were really asking: where do you come from, who are your ancestors, what story do you carry?

Why clan names?

Why did our ancestors use clan names?

Clan names helped people:

  • โœ“Remember their ancestors
  • โœ“Preserve history
  • โœ“Show respect
  • โœ“Identify family connections
  • โœ“Avoid marrying close relatives
  • โœ“Pass knowledge from one generation to another

Among many South African cultures, a clan name is often considered more important than a surname โ€” because it connects a person to a much older family history.

Did You Know? Fun Facts

What about Europe?

People all over the world once asked the same questions. Here is how names became surnames across the ocean.

๐Ÿ‘‘ No Surnames?

Many Europeans also did not have surnames.

Long ago, people often used descriptions to tell one person apart from another. Imagine a village with five people named John!

  • โš’๏ธ John the Smith
  • ๐Ÿž John the Baker
  • ๐Ÿ”๏ธ John from the Hill
  • ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง John, son of Robert

Over time, these descriptions became family surnames.

โš”๏ธ The Story of Smith

One of the most common surnames in the world.

A smith was a skilled craftsperson who worked with metal. If your ancestor was the village smith, people might call your family the Smiths.

โš”๏ธ Swords
๐Ÿ”จ Tools
๐ŸŽ Horseshoes
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Armour
๐Ÿชต The Story of Cooper

A barrel-making family.

A cooper made wooden barrels. Before plastic bottles and metal containers, barrels were used to store almost everything.

๐ŸŽ Food
๐Ÿบ Drinks
๐ŸŒพ Grain
๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Oils

A family known for making barrels might become The Coopers.

Did Kings and Queens Have Surnames?

Here's a surprising fact!

For much of history, many kings and queens did not use surnames the way ordinary people do. They were known by their kingdom, royal house, or title.

For example, Queen Elizabeth II belonged to the House of Windsor. "Windsor" is the name of the royal house or dynasty โ€” not a surname in the everyday sense.

A king didn't need a surname if everyone already knew who the king was!

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Place Names

Many surnames came from where people lived.

  • HillLived near a hill
  • WoodLived near a forest
  • BrookLived near a stream
  • Atkinson"Child of Atkin"
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Parent Names

Many surnames meant "son of..."

  • JohnsonSon of John
  • RobertsonSon of Robert
  • DavidsonSon of David
  • PetersonSon of Peter

This is very similar to Shaka kaSenzangakhona โ€” "Shaka, son of Senzangakhona."

โš’๏ธ Job Names

Famous surnames that began as professions.

  • SmithMetal worker
  • CooperBarrel maker
  • BakerMade bread
  • MillerGround grain
  • CarpenterBuilt with wood
  • TaylorMade clothes
  • FletcherMade arrows
  • MasonBuilt with stone
