Our ancestors. Our pride. Our future. Discover the clan names, praises and family traditions that make South Africaโs story unforgettable.
Did You Know?
A name carried a whole story.
Many of our ancestors did not use first names and surnames the way we do today. Instead, people were known by:
Their father or ancestor
Their clan
Their achievements
Their character
Their homeland
Shaka kaSenzangakhona โ โShaka, son of Senzangakhona.โ
Mzilikazi kaMashobane โ โMzilikazi, son of Mashobane.โ
When someone asked, โWho are your people?โ they were really asking: where do you come from, who are your ancestors, what story do you carry?
Why clan names?
Why did our ancestors use clan names?
Clan names helped people:
โRemember their ancestors
โPreserve history
โShow respect
โIdentify family connections
โAvoid marrying close relatives
โPass knowledge from one generation to another
Among many South African cultures, a clan name is often considered more important than a surname โ because it connects a person to a much older family history.
Did You Know? Fun Facts
What about Europe?
People all over the world once asked the same questions. Here is how names became surnames across the ocean.
๐ No Surnames?
Many Europeans also did not have surnames.
Long ago, people often used descriptions to tell one person apart from another. Imagine a village with five people named John!
โ๏ธ John the Smith
๐ John the Baker
๐๏ธ John from the Hill
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง John, son of Robert
Over time, these descriptions became family surnames.
โ๏ธ The Story of Smith
One of the most common surnames in the world.
A smith was a skilled craftsperson who worked with metal. If your ancestor was the village smith, people might call your family the Smiths.

Did Kings and Queens Have Surnames?
Here's a surprising fact!
For much of history, many kings and queens did not use surnames the way ordinary people do. They were known by their kingdom, royal house, or title.
For example, Queen Elizabeth II belonged to the House of Windsor. "Windsor" is the name of the royal house or dynasty โ not a surname in the everyday sense.
A king didn't need a surname if everyone already knew who the king was!
๐๏ธ Place Names
Many surnames came from where people lived.
